Scouting for Food

Scouting for Food - "Bridging the Gap between Hunger and Abundance."

Community Service is an important part of the Scouting Movement and has been for over 100 years!  For many years, Pikes Peak Council has sponsored a Council-wide community service project called Scouting for Food. Scouts and Scouters alike are collecting food for many of the food banks in our communities.

This year, Scouting for Food is the premier service event for all units in the Pikes Peak Council and we have come up with several ways that your unit can participate!  This will be a great way for your unit to reach out into our communities to tell them that Scouting is here to serve!

Beginning on April 1, 2020 - our Annual Scouting for Food Campaign will kickoff  this massive gathering of food from throughout the Southern Colorado area with the support of Care and Share, other food banks, and significant local publicity for Scouting.  There will be ONE drop off location:  Care and Share facility at 2605 Preamble Point   --   ACCEPTING DONATIONS FROM 10:30AM - 3:00PM on April 25, 2020.

How can your unit participate?  You can participate in four ways!

Door-to-door

This is how many of our units in past campaigns have participated--Scouting units will canvas their communities to collect canned goods from their neighbors.  This year we will encourage units that want to participate will have from April 1st to April 24th to collect food donations.  We understand that units as well as their members are currently Scouting at Home due to the state-mandated social distancing protocol.  With that, Units are asked to minimize contact with others or be at a safe distance of 6 or more feet when interacting with others.

Consolidated Food Drop Offs

Much like Care and Share's method of collecting food items with a drop off point, Units can also coordinate with their communities to have a collection point at a designated location within their neighborhoods.  By maintaining a manned collection drop off location, neighbors can visit your collection point to deliver donations safely under the no-contact rule.

Retail Food Drive

In the same way your unit might opt to partner with your local food outlet for Show and Sells like with popcorn and camp card sales, your unit would approach the local manager of your favorite store front and get permission to have Scouts outside their door. Care and Share has already agreed to provide a list of the most need foods items. We will provide that list to each unit so that customers will know how to provide maximum effectiveness before they enter the store.

Corporate Food Drives

For first time units, we would encourage you to partner with corporate and business organizations to have food drives.  Units can do this in two ways.  First, if a Scouting parent works for or knows a business that would be willing to have a food drive, they can ask whether that organization would like to partner with the Scouts.  Or your unit can ask the Pikes Peak Council to pair you with one of our Corporate or Merit Badge partners.  What a wonderful way to let our business community find out what Scouting is all about and a great way for our Scouts to be introduced to local businesses!  A little kickoff at the company headquarters the week before our April 18th Scouting for Food day with a couple uniformed scouts would make a great first impression!

And of course you can participate in more than one of these methods if you like!
