Background Checks

As dedicated BSA volunteers, you understand the importance of keeping our youth safe in the Scouting program. To ensure Youth Protection, our organization has conducted criminal background checks on all new volunteers since April 2003. Because some volunteers have been continually registered in the program before April 2003, some have not had a criminal background check. In the next few moths, we will be communicating with those volunteers on this issue.

Volunteers who have not had a background check will receive a letter from our Chief Scout Executive, Bob Mazzuca, recognizing them as valued volunteers and explaining the need for criminal background checks and our continued youth protection efforts. The letter will explain the need for consent to conduct a criminal background check and direct volunteers to a new Web site (www.bsacbc.org) where volunteers can authorize and provide information needed to conduct a CBC.

Statue of Liberty (Lady Liberty) Project

ImageOn February 5, 1950, an eight-foot replica of the Statue of Liberty was donated by the Pikes Peak Council, Boy Scouts of America, to the City of Colorado Springs. (This was the second such statue of 200 dedicated in the United States. The first statue was dedicated in Kansas City.) Lady Liberty was located on the grounds of City Hall. The dedication ceremony was conducted by Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Explorer Scouts of the Pikes Peak Council.

In 2000, due to remodeling and landscaping of City Hall, Lady Liberty was relocated to the Colorado Springs Police Operations building – on a temporary basis. Weather and time, etc., have taken their toll on Lady Liberty. At this time, Lady Liberty is in the process of being completely refurbished. Upon completion, it will again take its place in front of City Hall and will be rededicated to the City of Colorado Springs by the Scouts of Pikes Peak Council.
